Traverse magazine lists Best Eats

Emily Betz Tyra tracks down 41 of the best eats in Northern Michigan in the March issue of Traverse magazine. From the lobster cakes at Grand Traverse Resort's Aerie restaurant, to homemade baklawa at the counter of the 14th Street Mobil Station in Traverse City; a cookie dough frosted brownie (yum!) at Blue Heron Cafe in Cadillac, Apple Yum Salad at Thai Orchid Cuisine in Petoskey, to the kraut dogs at Bunting's in Cedar. I can vouch for those kraut dogs, having enjoyed them several times last year. Sounds like the other 40 delectables are a good excuse for some road trips this summer!

Connecting Farms to Schools

In Prosperous Farms, Well-Fed Kids, Diane Conners of the Michigan Land Use Institute shares several local success stories to connect northern Michigan farms and schools. Plugging a locavore lifestyle

Just came across this great article by Nancy Krcek Allen in the Record-Eagle, titled Make a 'Locavore's Holiday': buy local.

"I woke to the knowledge that my chef colleagues and I are merely window dressing. It's the farmers and growers who should be lauded superstars with their own television shows," writes Allen, who's been a chef and culinary educator for 16 years. "But farming isn't sexy. This holiday season I cast my food dollar vote with my neighbor-growers."

State Theatre premiere to benefit Northwest Food Coalition

Next Monday, the State Theatre in Traverse City will hold Michigan's premiere of Charlie Wilson's War, which, says Michael Moore, is "one of the holiday season's most anticipated films." And because that night, December 17, will mark the one-month anniversary of the re-opened State Theatre, the premiere will benefit the Northwest Food Coalition. One hundred percent of the evening's ticket proceeds will go the coalition, which serves 35 food pantries in Northwest Michigan: Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau and Wexford counties.

Buying Local

With the bounty of another CSA/farmers market season behind us, and the winter solstice just 5 weeks away, it becomes more of a challenge to buy locally in Northern Michigan. Fortunately, the wines, spirits, jams, cheeses, breads and other delicious local products are available year round (and make a great combo for gift baskets). But even local produce can be found. As Joan D'Argo points out in Oryana's recent "Natural Food News," during November and December Oryana will carry local certified organic apples and onions and local sustainable potatoes and garlic; and depending on weather, kale, collards and chard. Christopher Jacobs has created new signage to identify local produce. Look for green signs for local organic, and red for local produce grown using sustainable methods. Why does this matter? As Joan writes, "If each resident in Grand Traverse County spent just $10 a week on locally grown food, local products and local businesses, $3,000,000 every month would be invested in local people, local farms and independent local businesses." Something to take to heart when planning meals and selecting gifts for the upcoming holiday season!

Toast the Season Tickets Going Fast

Get a great meal and support some wonderful charities! The first weekend has sold out, but limited tickets remain for the second weekend - November 17 & 18, 2007. Order yours now.
