CSA, Wine, and a Variety of Culinary Classes at NMC
Check out Northwestern Michigan College's winter schedule of community classes, where you'll find several of interest to local foodies. NMC offers gift certificates for a class, and you save five bucks if you purchase one ($25 or more) by December 18. That'd be a fun stocking stuffer! Here are just a few of the offerings.
Community Support Agriculture: Access Local Food, Building Local Economies
What is CSA? Community Supported Agriculture is a unique localized business model for farms and a delicious opportunity for consumers to access locally grown food. In this 2-hour class, local organic farmer Dr. Marty Heller will present the basics of CSA -- how it is a win-win-win relationship among people who grow food, people who eat food, and the land where it is grown. We will screen a 30-minute video produced from footage taken on Marty's 2006 bicycle tour of CSA farms in Michigan, enjoy some delectable locally grown foods, and answer your questions about CSA, sustainable agriculture, and local and seasonal food. For anyone interested in strengthening our local economy while preserving agriculture, accessing locally grown food, or just enjoying talking about and eating good food.
Wine, Women, and Wise Investing
Kick back after work and join your girlfriends for a relaxed evening of wine tasting and financial planning. Kathy Meteyer, tasting room manager at Longview Winery will offer food and wine pairing suggestions and a sampling of different wines including their award-winning cherry port complemented by a rich chocolate truffle for a sweet ending. Cleanse your palette and your mind before gaining tools and techniques from Heather Boivin, financial advisor with Edward Jones, for spending wisely, establishing security, and aligning money with your values. Whether you're working with a few dollars a week or a significant amount, you'll pick up a tip or two to take home and implement.
