Culinary Tours in Leelanau and Petoskey
Whether you're a visitor or a local, Learn Great Foods sounds like a great way to experience the local foods of northern Michigan. Now in its fourth year, the agritourism company was started by Ann Dougherty to teach people about the link between sustainable farming, great cooking and the environment. Ann organizes tours and retreats in northern Michigan that feature chocolate, fishing, CSA farms, and a whole host of shops and experiences.
Each Wednesday from May through October, Learn Great Foods offers a Leelanau Peninsula culinary tour, featuring two food stops, cooking demonstrations, and an organic gourmet dinner. The tour is based at Sweeter Song Farm in Cedar, a CSA organic farm owned by Judy Reinhardt and Jim Schwantes. A Go Fish! Retreat is also scheduled Oct. 31-Nov. 2 in Leland, Michigan.
Similar tours are held in Petoskey, based at Crooked Tree Arts Center. Events are planned through November 30; check the Petoskey schedule for details. Highlights include a Jiimaan Tour and Tasting on May 30 and each Friday in September. The jiimaan is a Native American canoe made of wood.
