Esselstyn to speak in Petoskey May 19

Location: North Central Michigan College Library
Time & Date: Wednesday, May 19, 7:00 pm

Dr.Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., an internationally known surgeon, researcher and clinician at the Cleveland Clinic, will speak at North Central Michigan College on Wednesday, May 19 at 7 p.m., in the library on the Petoskey campus. Dr. Esselstyn says that a plant-based, oil-free diet can prevent and stop the progression of heart disease and reverse its effects. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States for men and women. (see his website for more info.)

Dr. Esselstyn's initial study involved patients with advanced coronary artery disease. Despite the aggressive treatment they received, among them bypasses and angioplasties, five of the original group were told by their cardiologists they had less than a year to live. Within months on Dr. Esselstyn's program, their cholesterol levels, angina symptoms, and blood flow improved dramatically. Twelve years later, 17 compliant patients had no further cardiac events. Adherent patients survived beyond twenty years free of symptoms.

Dr. Esselstyn and his wife, Ann Crile Esselstyn, have followed a plant-based diet for more than 26 years. Mrs. Esselstyn will be available for discussions about practical approaches to the diet.

Dr. Esselstyn presently directs the cardiovascular prevention and reversal program at The Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute. He was a gold medal rower in the 1956 Olympic Games and the first recipient of the Benjamin Spock Award for Compassion in Medicine. He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Cleveland Clinic Alumni Association in 2009.

This free lecture is presented by Dr. Charles Huebner, Northern Michigan Regional Hospital, Grain Train Natural Foods Co-op, North Central Michigan College, and Harbor LifeStyle Center.
