ISLAND helps people become native to place by:

Supporting artists -visionaries, conceptual explorers and compelling communicators- with dedicated time, space and resources to create new work;

Restoring the old and developing the new skills and traditions of community self-reliance;

Creating and sharing a broad collection of tools for ecological living.

Hog Breakdown and Charcuterie Workshop with Steven Grostick

The workshop will start with a hands-on hog breakdown from primal cuts of meat into cuts for charcuterie. Then, using simple cooking techniques, you will learn to preserve meat in your own home through salting, smoking and curing.

Join us at the new Rapid City Community Garden! This spring garden series is held at the Red School House, Clearwater Township Community Center, 5407 River Street Northwest, Rapid City, MI from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Free for Rapid City Community Garden members, students, teachers, staff and parents. $5-$10 suggested donation for others.

Walking the Walk: Bold Steps Toward a Regional Food System

MISSION: The NMSFC serves as a vehicle to promote and build a local vibrant agriculture community, to equip the small farm community with the tools to be successful, and to be a forum for the open exchange of ideas within the small farm community. This is accomplished primarily through the annual conference in January, but is also accomplished through the support of other education opportunities throughout the year.

Goals:

  1. To provide an outstanding educational event that meets the needs of the attendees of the conference.
  2. Provide a forum for the open exchange of ideas within the small farm community.
  3. Support small farm educational programs throughout the year.
  4. Help to build a local network of small farms, community businesses, and local government for the expressed purpose of building the local food economy.

Fungi and Fermentation Skill Swap

Join the Institute for Sustainable Living, Art, and Natural Design (ISLAND) and the Martha Wagbo Farm and Education Center as we explore the wide world of fungi and fermentations. Anyone with an interest in local foods; wild-crafting; food preservation; or tasty, healthful meals will greatly benefit from the workshops offered here. Experienced teachers will present an array of topics, including wild mushroom hikes, mushroom dyeing, mushroom paper, cheese making, vegetable fermentations, mead making, and much more! There will also be local vendors selling fungal and fermented goods.
